Staging

This animation was directed and designed by a man named Ben Hibon with help from Framestone. This video uses staging very well throughout the animation. Staging is about effectively communicating by using certain shots and angles in your animation that best match the feeling your audience you want. An example of staging done well in this animation is at 1:50 the animator is suppose to show the man with the wand as drunk with power and savage. And so we get a shot from the ground showing the character with his chin up almost as if looking for more people to unleash his wand on. While we also get a shot of a defeated person's corpse through the silhouette on the right floor and the arm sticking out. Another example of good staging in this film is from 2:20-2:30 the male in the background is going crazy and is very sad because even after reviving his wife he can't keep her. The female ghost is suppose to be sad because she does not belong in the same world as hm. And so we see her reaching grasping at the air slightly before disappearing to nothing. Lastly we get a shot of the man hanging himself. However it's not a boring shot with the corpse in the dead center. The creator appears to use the rule of thirds here as we see the corpse in roughly the left section 1/3rd the way and we see some lights on the right. The shot itself is interesting as well using a tilted plane and the corpse being a silhouette

Appeal

This piece was created by Hyunjoo Song at CalArts and I feel it uses appeal very well. The concept itself is pretty simple its essentially about the wolf getting rejected by red for him being a scary wolf, then a conflict occurs and the wolf saves red. I think the concept itself is appealing in its own way and thats what really makes it good. On top of the somewhat cute and appealing concept the artist uses very simple drawings that are also cute in their own way. The characters all feel somewhat real and relatable to an extent which is another thing I feel is needed to make something appeal to people.I think this piece takes all the previously mentions things and does them outstandingly to create a overall appealing animation.
